I am a PhD student writing an animal-human history of vegetarian thought in Britain during the late-Victorian and Edwardian period. This means I am not only interested in the intellectual thought of vegetarians, but also the interagency between those who abstained from flesh in their diet and the non-human animals in their lives. I have chosen this period for two reasons: (1), the vegetarian movement saw a ‘revival’ of sorts during and after the presidency of Francis Newman at the Vegetarian Society (1873-1883); and (2), the broader societal and intellectual milieu became increasingly conducive to a reconsideration of human-animal relations. The body of my thesis currently consists of three parts: (1) bodies, (2) ethics, and (3) ecology.
