Grant Summary: We ran a vegan cookery programme with 37 adults with learning disabilities on a weekly basis. This was very well received by all attendees, many of whom were using and enjoying new vegan products.
Quote from Organiser: “Adults with learning difficulties are often not given a choice in what they eat. We promote independence within our group and encourage the planning and cooking of their own meals with help from support workers. We have ran cooking sessions before and have noted while users will often chose simple foods such as pizza and chips, when they are offered a choice of healthy vegetable-based meals, they are thoroughly enjoying them. We believe nothing exists in the area to encourage adults with learning disabilities to try a vegan diet and by incorporating this into a cooking lesson we believe it would be a fun and enjoyable activity. We also believe, given that we operate in a deprived area, that our participants would benefit from seeing a financial benefit to a vegan diet.”
