The Vegan Society’s International Rights Network and the Vegetarian Society of Denmark present a one-day conference in Copenhagen on:
The Legal Protection of Vegans
In February 2024, in a case brought on behalf of a vegan family by The Vegetarian Society of Denmark (DVF), a Danish court ruled that vegans are protected under Article 9 of the European Court of Human Rights. This ruling is the latest in a series of legal cases, including in Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom, that recognise that the prohibition on discrimination applies to vegans.
These positive outcomes for vegans reflect a growing understanding in domestic legal systems that veganism is a philosophical belief that comes with the legal meaning of the international human right to freedom of belief, as reflected in Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
This year, The Vegan Society’s International Rights Network joins forces with the DVF to present a one-day conference on legal protection for vegans. Topics we will be addressing include:
- the issues faced by vegans
- the scope of legal protection for vegans in different European countries
- the needs of vegans and the effectiveness of political lobbying
- building on legal protection and normalising vegan inclusion
- the status of vegans in law outside of Europe.
All of the presentations will be in English.
